SHENCO 250

A partnership between VECCA and the Shenandoah County 250th Anniversary Committee yields several projects providing opportunity for creative artists and the community to engage in the 2022 celebration. Look for more information on these opportunities to be added throughout the year.

geocache art

In partnership with Massanutten Regional Governor's School and local artists, VECCA has sponsored several geocaches around Shenandoah County in celebration of its 250th Anniversary. Geocaches are outdoor, hidden containers or locations, which are found via a virtual treasure map (aka coordinates) using a Global Positioning System (GPS). Each geocache is hidden in public sites, or sites offering permission, around Shenandoah County, and is listed below. You can access the geocache coordinates through the link provided - you only need to download the Geocaching app to your cell phone. Once you have the coordinates, use them to navigate to the geocache, which is a waterproof container that contains a log book, a pen, and in some cases a special prize. Look for more geocaches to be added throughout 2022.

If you are an artist and interested in creating art for this project, please email VECCArts@gmail.com.

Paleoart is an artistic representation of prehistoric life through scientific research and data. The geocache Graptolite Paleoart shares a visual perspective of the Shenandoah River area from the Ordovician time period. At this location, over 400 million years ago, a shallow sea existed and the Shenandoah County area was located about 20 degrees south of the equator. To the north lay ancient North America; offshore to the south, a chain of volcanic islands existed that would eventually accrete onto the continent. In between, the Martinsburg formation was being deposited in this shallow marine basin as the colonial, planktonic organisms, known as Graptolites, settled and were mixed into and buried with submarine landslide deposits known as Turbidites. The Martinsburg formation is a shale that runs along the base of the Massanutten Mountain and whose bedding and joint orientation creates the seven bends of the Shenandoah River. This digital representation was drawn by Rachel Tusing.

Artistic museings

During September 2022, VECCA, Muse Vineyards, and ShenCo250 co-sponsor "Artistic MUSEings: Celebrating Shenandoah County's 250th Anniversary" - a VECCA member show featuring art on the theme by local artists.
